Every year, Earth Day is marked across the world in a bid to highlight use of the globe’s natural resources and the steps we can all take in preserving the environment.

As well as attending or hosting events on the day itself (April 22nd), the awareness day encourages us all to think every single day about the impact that we’re having on the globe.

It’s a topic which is incredibly important to us as a company – and across the wider Traffic Group – and we’ve taken numerous environmental strides over the years.

Commercial Director Ian Hind explains: “At AGD, we not only want to mitigate and eradicate any negative impacts we could have as a company upon the environment; we’re also committed to exploring the ways we can go further than this, and ensure we positively affect our local environment and the wider world.

“We’re proud of the efforts we have already made but we’re not going to stop there – environmentalism is a journey and it’s one that we will continue to take, searching for new and innovative processes and procedures which will benefit the globe.

“As well as reviewing the ways in which we undertake our work here at AGD, we also see a crucial link between our environmental policies and our products themselves.

“By reducing the likelihood of traffic build-up, and by encouraging sustainable travel – such as walking and cycling – by ensuring junctions and crossings are safer to use, we can play our part in reducing the emissions associated with transportation – all the while encouraging local authorities and traffic planners to do the same.

To mark 2023’s Earth Day, we wanted to share five key milestones in our environmental journey:

Leading manufacturer of ITS product solutions AGD Systems will exhibit at this year’s Highways UK exhibition, 7-8 November at the NEC, Birmingham.

This flagship event for the people and organisations involved in the planning, designing, building, operating and future-proofing of the UK’s road network comprises a multi-stream conference combined with a major exhibition.

AGD will be showcasing its new 343 Highways Monitoring Radar at the show. Developed using the company’s experience and expertise in designing radars for highway enforcement, the AGD 343 is an easy-to-integrate traffic flow monitoring solution that provides real-time data on multi-lane highways.

With highway authorities calling for a moratorium on penetration of the road surface there is increasing demand for more flexible above-ground traffic monitoring solutions, as Ian Hind, AGD’s commercial director, explains: “The 343 was developed in response to feedback from the UK and around the world that there is a need to be able to locate traffic monitoring radar close to the carriageway. Most radars must be mounted between 5m and 8m from the carriageway, and there isn’t always that amount of space available. The 343 can be mounted as close as 2m from inner edge of the inside lane and will still provide information for the lane immediately below the radar, as well as the lane on the farthest point of the carriageway.”

In order to create the solution, AGD worked with a design partner to develop a bespoke antenna that allows the 343 to look down at 30 degrees, as well as being able to monitor ten lanes of traffic, looking across both carriageways to detect vehicle travel in approaching and receding directions.

“The 343 can be used almost anywhere for better-informed decision-making and optimised traffic flows. It combines well with our enforcement solutions to offer a full product suite for UK smart motorways as well as international highways,” says Ian Hind.

At Highways UK, AGD will also present its WiFi-enabled, IP-capable 645 Pedestrian Detector – now with 10m x 3m detection zone, and the non-intrusive, loop-replacing 318 Traffic Control Radar. Visitors to AGD’s stand can expect to see the following innovations:

Move OVA Loops…AGD to showcase 318 at Scotland Road Expo 2016!

AGD Systems will be showcasing its industry leading ‘318’ Intelligent Detection Radar System, as an alternative method of advanced vehicle detection for MOVA sites, at Scotland’s Road Expo 2016.

Taking place on 2nd and 3rd of November at Edinburgh’s Royal Hyland Centre, the Road Expo attracts key stakeholders from across the Scottish road network. Exhibiting on Stand G12, AGD will be showcasing the recent trials of its ‘318’ radar detector, with in-built AGD Technology, at a number of MOVA sites across the UK.

To date, trials have proven that the 318 provides accurate, critical event data for supporting the MOVA algorithm and increasing traffic flow – enabling a reliable and precise input of occupancy data for both ‘In’ and ‘X’ detection points up to 150m from the stop line.

Compared to conventional inductive loop detection, customers have confirmed that the 318 offers a real non-intrusive and cost-effective solution that eliminates the need to cut into the road surface, thus reducing the risk of potential pockets that wear from traffic and the weather.

By using AGD technology, installers benefit from not requiring expensive ducting activity away from the stop line to the ‘In’ and ‘X’ detection points – which has traditionally prevented some sites benefiting from MOVA.

Dan Preece, Executive Engineer at Integrated Traffic Services Limited, has created several successful schemes using AGD’s 318, and on discussing the benefits of using RADAR detection for MOVA, he said: “It is an exciting time in the industry as new technology is coming through fast, not least of which is the AGD 318 radar. The Dual output version of this radar is going to make a big difference to the amount of schemes that are able to be converted to MOVA operation, particularly in the urban/semi urban environment where traditionally cost, services and available ducting has made the upgrade prohibitively expensive or simply not practical.”

“A product like the 318 can grow alongside MOVA development, potentially offering much more than on/off gate output which will enhance MOVA’s ability to act intelligently to the behaviour, type and level of demand from all types of vehicles.”

The ‘318’ will be a focal point of AGD’s stand at Road Expo 2016, together with its range of ground breaking intelligent radar detection systems.
